155 Scholars and Artists Sign Open Letter Against Trans Repression in Berlin
After a horde of police officers swarmed a trans support group at Casa Kuà, more than 150 international academics, writers, and filmmakers are demanding that "increasingly authoritarian" Germany drop the case. Read the letter in full.
On an otherwise quiet Sunday evening less than two weeks ago, 38 Berlin police officers stormed into the Kreuzberg community centre Casa Kuà and detained the women who were there for a trans support group meeting, checking IDs and ransacking the space. Casa Kuà and The Dolls, a group that meets regularly as a safe and educational space for trans women, are now facing an investigation that alleges that they've dispensed hormones in the space without medical supervision — something that Casa Kuà was "shocked" by.
Since the raid, the Berlin queer community has been quick to denounce the attack as a form of political repression. Now that support has gone international, as more than 150 notable academics, writers, and artists across the globe have signed an open letter in support of Casa Kuà, The Dolls, and queer and trans people facing state and administrative violence worldwide.
