A Berlin Court Just Ordered the BVG to Run Far-Right Ads

In June, the BVG terminated an advertising campaign on its buses and trains after public backlash. A court has now ruled that right-wing platform NIUS has a right to run ads.

Berlin's public transit agency is known for, among other things, its own splashy marketing: funny slogans on its trams, jokes on its billboards, fashion shows in U-Bahn tunnels with models wearing the seat patterns from its buses. But it's now becoming clear that the company has less control over what appears in and on its public transit that Berliners may have thought.

On Monday, the Berlin Administrative Court ruled that the BVG must continue a controversial advertising campaign promoting the right-wing, populist media outlet NIUS. A court spokesperson said that NIUS had a "right to equal and non-discriminatory access to BVG advertising space."

In just one week, the BVG has managed to completely ruin the “diverse image” it has spent years building.
