Speeding Tram Derails in Hohenschönhausen, Injuring 20
The M5 and M17 are out of service, and the tram has now been craned off the tracks.
On Tuesday, a tram derailed at the corner of Arnimstraße and Wartenberger Straße in Hohenschönhausen, clipping two overhead line masts and sending the vehicle flying off the tracks. Twenty people were injured, three of them seriously – 12 were taken to hospital, and the rest treated on site. The incident is the most serious tram accident Berlin has seen in years.
The damage was severe. The tram – BVG's newest Flexity model, 40 metres long – had its middle sections completely destroyed.
