€78,000 Raised for Eoto After Volksbad Closure. But the Racist Threats Haven't Stopped
The Volksbad pool closed last week after a racist media storm. Now a GoFundMe for the activist group is raising money – and drawing more threats of violence.
Last week, a wave of right-wing media attacks crested and broke over the Volksbad, the public swimming pool temporarily installed by the Volksbühne this summer. As we wrote on Friday, a campaign of incitement began in the right-wing media outlet Nius, spread to Bild and Welt, and then led to one CDU politician staring into a camera and lamenting that: "I'm not allowed to go swimming because I'm white."
All this whipped up such a climate of hysteria that the swimming event, intended for the children of Black communities, had to be cancelled following racist threats. The Volksbühne responded with a giant banner that read, simply: "Fuck you."
But the fallout has continued.
Explicit threats of violence, one caller warning of a "hammer in the face," verbal abuse, or the more unsettling "Tick-tock..."
HEIST is a worker-owned online magazine, founded by writers and editors who after years working across Berlin's media landscape believed something essential was missing.
Anyone living here has felt a growing gap between the city as it actually is and the version being served up by mainstream outlets. We experienced that disconnect firsthand.
